Dune Part 2 is an upcoming American film directed by Denis Villeneuve, from a screenplay by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, and Eric Roth. Serving as a direct sequel to the 2021 film, it is the second part of a two-part adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert and will cover the second half of the book.

By the time Denis Villeneuve’s Frank Herbert novel opened in American theaters, all signs were pointing to a Dune sequel. On October 26, there was official confirmation from Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. that Dune Part 2 was officially released.

As Villeneuve himself announced in a statement: I just received news from Legendary that we are officially moving forward with Dune Part 2. It was a dream of mine to adapt Frank Herbert’s Dune and I have the fans, the cast and crew, Legendary, and Warner Bros. to support this dream. This is only the beginning.

Denis Villeneuve had always envisioned adapting Frank Herbert’s novel into a two-part film, having already expressed interest in creating a Dune film trilogy by adapting Herbert’s 1969 sequel novel, Dune Messiah, into a third film.

The director said before the US release of the first film that a second Dune book, The Messiah of Dune, would make an extraordinary film. I’ve always seen that there could be a trilogy; After that, we’ll see. It is a work of years; I can’t think of going further than that.

Development began in 2016 after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and TV rights to Dune. Villeneuve signed on as director in 2017 with the intention of a two-part adaptation of the novel for film. Production contracts were secured only for the first film, with the second film being greenlit based on the success of the first film. Although Villeneuve was concerned about the certainty of a sequel following the simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release of the first film, Warner Bros.

Dune Part 2 release date
