Start crafting your (animated) engines because another movie based on Nintendo’s Super Mario video game franchise is coming soon. The film, which has yet to receive an official title, is an animated project featuring the voices of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Planning for the next Mario film began in 2016 but did not officially begin production until 2020.

It is the third feature film adaptation of the video game franchise. The first was the 1986 animated film, Super Mario Bros. The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! This was followed by the 1993 live-action film Super Mario Bros., starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, and Samantha Mathis.

Mario movie release date

The Super Mario movie will be released in theaters in the United States on April 7, 2023. The film was earlier scheduled to release on December 21, 2022, but got delayed by a few months. It will be available to stream on Peacock 45 days after its theatrical release. The film will also release in Japan on April 28, 2023.

Nintendo and Illumination began discussions about making the film in 2016. After four years of talks, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that the film was taking place with an expected 2022 release date. The entire cast has already done their voice work for the film. Charlie Day, who voiced Luigi, told Screen Rant in February 2022 that the work was highly confidential.
